Padres Ace Peavy on the Market

By Matt Valentine

In what I would deem a fairly surprising move, the Padres are considering moving ace pitcher Jake Peavy to the highest bidder.

Peavy, a Cy Young winner had somewhat of a down year this season with 10 wins and 11 loses, but performed quite well in every other pitching category. He had the third lowest ERA in the National League with a 2.85 and struck out 166 batters.

Peavy does have a no trade clause in his contract which could help him get his choice of team, but apparently his top five choices have not expressed enough interest to make them a viable option. Among Peavy’s top choices are Atlanta, St. Louis, the Chicago Cubs, the L.A. Dodgers and the Houston Astros.

Jake Peavy is on the trading block

Yet, none of these teams have made a viable offer and the Padres have begun reaching out to other teams.  Of course, when any big name comes on the market the Yankees are always in the mix, but many believe that Peavy would not enjoy playing in New York or in the American League for that fact, and are unsure if he would sign off on a deal that sent him to the Yankees.

The Braves seem to be the team in the best position to make a deal for Peavy which would have to include some young pitchers and perhaps a few outfielders. The Braves have promising young talent in pitchers such as Jair Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson and center fielders Jason Heyward and Jordan Scaefer. However, the Braves are reluctant to talk about dealing their best prospects.

Peavy is an extremely attractive trade option because he is under contract until 2013 and is just 27 years old. It is very rare that a pitcher of Peavy’s talent and youth is even considered trade bait, but many in the Padres front office feel the team needs to get younger now, and Peavy is their best bargaining chip.

Where Peavy will land is anyones guess, but one thing is for sure… it won’t be in San Diego.

NHL Season Set to Begin Abroad

Will Detroit repeat? NHL season kicks off soon in Europe.

Will Detroit repeat? NHL season kicks off soon in Europe.

By Matt Valentine

Yes, its true.  Yes, I understand most of you could probably care less . Yes, that bothers me. Either way, whether you love it or hate it the NHL season will begin and it will begin sooner then you think.

In fact, the NHL is taking a page from MLB and the NBA in doing something that it has never done before… opening its regular season in Europe.

The opening games of the NHL season will take place as a double-header of sorts with games to beplayed in the Czech and Swedish capitals. It is something that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says Europe should get used to, ” We are hopefully ushering an era of a more permanent presence for the league (in Europe).”

That seems to indicate that the commissioner would at some point like to setup a franchise somewhere in the European market, but that day is still a long ways away and for now the NHL is content to give the European fans of hockey just a small sample of itself.

Like Bettman said the NHL is creating, “a program where we’re coming back on a regular basis to satisfy and address the interest that we know is in our game here.

One of the matchups featured in the double header will take place between two Eastern Conference teams on the rise, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Rangers. Both teams have undergone some significant roster changes and look to start the season off on the right skate. The game will take place in the Czech capital city of Prague.

The other game in the double-header will feature a match up between last seasons Stanley Cup finalist Pittsburgh Penguins and the underachieving Ottawa Seantors. This game will be played in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

Originally the NHL had planned just two games overseas to both to be played by the Anaheim Ducks and LA Kings in London for the opener but expanded their overseas schedule to the current four games.

The Europeans fans have proven themselves to be excellent hosts showing great enthusiasm for the games and the players. In fact, over 8,000 Czechs turned out just to see a Rangers practice session something that is completely unheard of back in the USA.

The players have also enjoyed their trip overseas though they have admitted that the travel can be tiring, they also enjoy having the opportunity to play in front of their home crowd. Such was the case with Rangers defenseman Michal Rozsival a Czech who said he was thrilled to play in front of a home crowd.

Considering the amount of knowledge and enthusiasm Europe has for hockey it makes sense for the NHL to market their brand there and to continue to expand their presence in the European market. Next year the destination seems likely to be Germany, another country will a strong enthusiasm for the game.

If only there was such enthusiasm for the game at home.

Bretty and The Jets

By Matt Valentine

The Favre saga in Green Bay has finally come to an end…allow me a moment to rejoice.

With a late night deal announced around 12:30 AM EST the Favre era in Green Bay officially came to an end and a new chapter will begin in the city that never sleeps.

Favre who is no stranger to the camera, will now find himself paying under the bright lights of Broadway, or more accurately the bright lights of Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

It must be a stunning upset to Buccaneers fans who thought they were the front runners in the Brett Favre sweepstakes, only to wake and find that the Jets had lured Favre to New York for a conditional draft pick in 2009.

According to NFL.com, the Packers will receive a fourth-round draft pick in 2009. The selection would turn into a third-rounder if Favre plays in 50 percent of the plays this season, a second-rounder if he plays in 70 percent and the Jets make the playoffs, or a first-round pick if he plays in 80 percent and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl.

Favre will most likely have to pass a physical before the trade becomes official, but the more important aspect of the deal is that Favre, who was once seemingly opposed to playing in New York, apparently signed off on the deal.

Favre’s arrival in New York signals the beginning of one era and the end of another, that is the end of the Chad Pennington era. Pennigton who is due to make $6 million will be traded or released by the Jets to make room for Favre who is scheduled to earn $12.7 million in 2008. I feel for Pennington, who was a player that poured his heart and soul into the Jets organization  fighting throw significant arm injuries to return to the team he loved. Yet, there are plenty of teams out there, perhaps the Bucs or Vikings, who could use the services of the weak armed but accurate QB.

The Jets stock has risen on many fronts with what could prove to be one of the best off seasons in the leagues history.  The Jets made significant additions through free agency to shore up some of their most glaring weaknesses. Particularly the addition of Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca to a young and improving line that contains promising starters Nick Mangold and D’brickashaw Ferguson should provide Favre with plenty of time to air it out.

How long Favre will be a Jet remains to be seen. The Jets have stated that they are taking it year by year and with the way Favre has handled things in the past that’s probably the best way to look at the situation. For now though, the Jets may have just turned themselves into a legitimate playoff contender and could even challenge the Patriots for the top spot in the AFC East.

Now that the move has finally been made, the media can focus on Brett’s moves on the field instead of off the field and I for one am happy as hell. Still, I wonder if the Packers and Favre will ever be able to mend their relationship in the future, considering that just a brief time ago the two were pretty much synonymous with one another.

And while Green Bay fans are probably in a state of deep mourning, or anger depending on how quickly they’re moving through the grieving process, Jets fans are in a deserved state of euphoria.

A euphoria which will only last as long as the Jets and Favre win.

Teixeira Traded to Angels

The Agels have to be praising new general manager Tony Reagins for the move that he just pulled off 1 day before MLB’s trade deadline. In a swift maneuver to add more protection to their lineup the Angels acquired slugging first baseman Mark Texira from the Atlanta Braves and sent rising star Casey Kotchman and a minor league pitcher to Atlanta.

Teixeira now an Angel.

Teixeira now an Angel.

It’s becoming a mid-summer tradition to “rent” Teixeira for an October run and this year is no different as Texiera is on the final year of his contract and will be a free agent at seasons end. Teixeira could demand as much as $20 million a year because he is by far the best first baseman available in the upcoming free agent market and should have a number of suitors if the Angels are unable to workout some type
of contract extension with Texiera by the end of the season.

Yet, the Angels have to be happy with the move, mortgaging a little bit of their futurte for the prospect of winning right now. The Angels already have one of the best rotations in the major leagues, they own the leagues best record , have an 11 1/2 game lead in the AL West and are now poised to correct one of their most glaring post-season problems…their offense.

Since winnning the World Series in 2002 the Angels have claimed three division titles, but won just one playoff series. During that stretch they were swept out of the playoffs twice, including last October by
the Boston Red Sox. The main problem has been finding a hitter dangerous enough to give Vladimir Guerrero some protection in the lineup, and now they have that in Teixeira.

Guerrero, the man who the Angels have relied on to provide their post-season pop, has produced poorly since claiming the World Series title in 2002. He’s batted just .183 with one home run in the 16 playoff games since 2002, most likely a result of the immense amount of pressure placed on him to perform in the post-season.

A number of other teams were interested in Teixeira but could not provide the Braves with the same type of package that the Angels were offering. The Arizona Diamonbacks who seemed an early frontrunner in acquiring Teixeira offered up Chad Tracy as possible trade bait, but Tracy is only under contract until 2009 while Kotchman is under contract for three more seasons. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays were also in the hunt for Teixeira, but could not put together a promising enough package either, leaving them some major offensive issues heading into the stretch.

The acquisition of Teixeira automatically makes the Angels one of baseball’s top contenders to capture the World Series. Their rotation has been dominant throughout much of the season, their key players are producing and have remianed healthy and with the addition of the switch hitting Teixeira they now have one of basbeall’s best lineup’s. Angel’s fans could find themselves in basbeall heaven at the end of the year.

Yankees, Pirates Make Six Player Trade

In a six player deal that was finalized on Saturday the Yankees acquired outfielder Xavier Nady and lefty reliever Damaso Marte in return the Pirates received top outfield prospect Jose Tabata and minor league right-handers Dan McCutchen, Jeff Karstens and Ross Ohlendorf.

Damaso Marte

Damaso Marte

The Yankees seemed to have gotten the best end of this deal considering the teams needs and the recent injuries to Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada which could keep them out for the remainder of the season. The Yankees had a need for a lefty pitcher in their bullpen as their entire bullpen staff is comprised of right handers. They also filled a need by bringing in the right handed Nady to their lefty dominated lineup.

Nady is batting .330 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs in 88 games. Marte is 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 46 2-3 innings. The players the Pirates acquired on the other hand are not performing nearly as well at the major league or minor league level. Ohlendorf was 1-1 with a 6.53 ERA in 25 games with the Yankees this season. He was demoted June 27 and had a 1-1 record with a 4.03 ERA in five starts with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Tabata was batting .248 with three homers and 36 RBIs with Double-A Trenton.

There was some indication that the Yankees brass had been discussing Barry Bonds as a possible addition to the team, but with the acquisition of Nady this seems very unlikely.

In my opinion this is one of the best moves GM Brian Cashman has made in his tenure as the Yankees general manager. Far exceeding acquistions like Carl Pavano who turned out to be one of the biggest busts in all of baseball. The move also turns the Yankees into a very legitimate threat to capture the AL East crown, with their defeat of Boston Friday they are just 2 games back in the chase for the pennant.

Also worth consideration is the fact that the Yankees will certainly get Wang back in their starting rotation at some point this year and may get either Posada or Matsui back should they not require season ending surgery. The next priority on Cashman’s list however, should be to acquire a starting pitcher to help the staff get through season until Wang’s return. Starters like Sidney Ponson and Darly Rasner have performed above expectations and can’t be expected to continue to pitch at such a high level.

If they do manage to make another deal for a starting pitcher they could catch a Red Sox team who has suffered a string of injuries to stars David Ortiz and Manny Rameriez, or a Tampa team that has not performed well on the road this season and has just one every day player batting over .300.

This trade could prove to be exactly what the Yanks needed to make a serious run at another World Series title.

Chacon on Waiver Wire After Altercation with GM

(Former Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon looking disgruntled on the mound)

We’ve all heard of players fighting players in the clubhouse or sometimes even in the dugout, but a player taking on a general manager? Now that is something I bet most of us have never in our wildest dreams thought would happen. Well, leave it up to former Astros Pitcher Shawn Chacon to turn our dreams into reality.

Chacon was released by the Astros Thursday, a day after him and the teams General Manager Ed Wade engaged in a physical altercation in the teams dining room.

Chacon has been disgruntled for quite some time, but seriously I don’t think this is the best way to go about expressing your frustration with the team. Getting into a shoving match with a GM is pretty much ensuring a one way ticket to the waiver wire, and though some team who is desperate for pitching support will most likely pluck Chacon off the wire, you have to wonder about a player who would take things this far.

Chacon is another example of a pampered player who refuses to buy into a team philosophy and puts himself above all else. His frustrations began when he was removed from the starting rotation after going 2-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 15 starts and 85 2-3 innings for Houston this year. The right-hander set a major league record for a starting pitcher with nine straight no-decisions to open the season. On one hand I guess I can understand Chacon’s frustration, I mean no one wants to set that type of major league record, but it’s not like this guys was pitching lights out and just getting bad breaks.

Chacon was repeadetly asked by the clubs Manager Cecil Cooper to sit down for a meeting to discuss media reports that he wanted to be traded after being bumped from the rotation. Chacon refused to meet with Cooper and was said to have ignored requests from pitching coach Dewey Robinson in the past as well.

The situation came to a head when GM Ed Wade approaced Chacon in the teams dining hall. Wade told reporters that, “I did not raise my voice to the player, curse the player, I did not make any defamatory remarks toward the player. Chacon responded with profane and threatening remarks and got up from his seat. He moved in front of me until we were chest to chest and then he shoved me to the ground. When I attempted to get to my feet, he shoved me a second time. At this point players and coaches intervened.”

The scene seems like something you would see on a playground, not in a major league clubhouse.

The teams decision to release Chacon was supported by commisioner Bud Selig, but they could run into problems with the players union if Chacon is not picked up by another team and Houston terminates his contract for cause.

Chacon on the other hand is receiving support from former teammates in Houston and around the league. Houston Pitcher Roy Oswalt told reporters that he hopes the incident does not ruin Chacon’s career, “Hopefully he’ll get a chance with somebody else. I don’t know. You can’t really judge one person on one thing.” Derek Jeter also threw his support behind Chacon stating that he would vouch for the pitchers character if the Yankees wanted to bring him back to the team. “Chac’s a friend of mine,” Jeter said. “I see Chac in the off-season. I wouldn’t have a problem with him. I think people need to find out all the details. Yeah, it doesn’t look good, doesn’t sound good, but I don’t know what happened. I can’t picture it happening, knowing him like I know him.”

We’ll have to wait and see if some team will take the risk on Chacon, he has until Monday to clear waivers. If no one does then it could be that Chacon’s career in the major leagues is over and maybe for good cause. In my opinion Chacon doesn’t have the talent to warrant such high risk character issues. What team in their right mind wants to see their GM end up on the DL?

Fantasy Update:Biggest Surprises

By Matt Valentine

Just like there are always a number of disappointing players, the fantasy season brings with it some big surprises and this year is no different. Some young studs have found their groove on the mound or in the batters box. While some seasoned vets are putting up the best numbers of their careers. These are the top 5 most surprising fantasy performers to date.

Biggest Surprises/ Best Value

1. Tim Lincecum: SP S.F. Giants

After an above average rookie season Lincecum has been fantastic in his sophomore season. He is currently second in the league in K’s with 53, and has posted a record of 5-1 with a 1.61 ERA for a dismal Giants team. Lincecum has the stuff to dominate, and making a move for this guy is a sound decision for any fantasy owner. I have Lincecum in my own league and was recently offered this trade: Dick-K and Hanley Ramirez for Jose Reyes and Lincecum. I will most likely make the deal as the prospect of replacing Reyes with the ever consistent Hanley is just too appealing to me, but I really hesitate to get rid of Lincecum. If this was a keeper league I probably wouldn’t do it.

2. Cliff Lee: SP Cleveland Indians

Lee has had good seasons in the past going 18-5 with a 3.79 ERA for Cleveland in 2005 but seemed to digress after that point. In fact in 2007 Cleveland sent Lee back down to the minors after Lee dropped to 5-8 with a 6.38 ERA in 16 starts. He was 0-4 with an 11.70 ERA in his final four starts, having given up 26 earned runs in 20 innings. Well, I don’t know what the hell happened to Lee in the off-season but this guy certainly found whatever it was he was missing. He’s come back this year on absolute fire having gone 6-0 so far, and posting a get this, league leading, microscopic 0.67 ERA. He’s striking people out at a good clip, about 5-8 K’s per game and hardly ever walks batters posting a 0.67 WHIP. Considering his stats from last year I’m betting anyone who took a flier on this guy in a late round is grinning ear to ear.

3. Rafael Furcal: SS L.A. Dodgers

Maybe there is something to be said about players entering a contract year. Furcal has been one of fantasy’s best performers this year outperforming many of the other “stud” short stops taken before him in many drafts. He was recently placed on the 15 day DL suffering from a lower back sprain which could be an issue for the rest of the season but if he comes back and performs anywhere near the level he was he would be an absolute bargain. Before his DL stint Furcal was batting .366 and showed vastly increased power having already tied his HR total from all of last year with 6. He’s a tremendous base runner and will put up runs in bunches. Considering where he was taken in most drafts, he may turn out to be the best bargain outside of Cliff Lee in all of fantasy baseball.

4. Josh Hamilton: OF Texas Rangers

I’m not sure if I would consider this a surprise but it has been a long, hard road just for Hamilton to make it to the majors let alone become a fantasy stud. After being one of baseball’s top prospects “The Natural” Hamilton, struggled with drug addiction that threatened to de-rail his career altogether. But man, has this kid risen from the ashes, to become one of baseball’s best all around threats. Hamilton hits for power 8 HR so far, is leading the league in RBI’s with 43, and is batting .306. With all the OF’s that went before him and all of the one’s he is out producing Hamilton is indeed a nice bargain.

5. Edinson Volquez: SP Cincinnati Reds

I have to be honest, I have never heard of this guy until this season and for that reason he may well be the biggest surprise in all of fantasy baseball. Volquez has pitched a grand total of 122 innings in the majors since 2005 making the 42.1 innings he’s pitched this year his career mark. If he continues to pitch the way he has it could end up being a hall of fame career, that’s how good he’s been. He has yet to surrender more than 1 run in his first 7 starts and has posted a 5-1 record with a 1.06 ERA. He needs to work on his control a bit more , if only to get his pitch count down but there are fantasy owners out there praising themselves at the moment for either plucking this guy off the waiver wire or making him a late round pick. Funnily enough Volquez and my other surprise Hamilton were traded for each other. I guess it’s worked out well for both teams to this point.

Fantasy Update: The 5 Most Disappointing Players

By Matt Valentine

Every year in fantasy there are a group of players who are drafted high and just don’t live up to their pre-season status. This year some of the leagues top talent have been huge headache’s for their fans and their fantasy owners alike. Let’s take a look at the 5 most disappointing fantasy players to date.

Biggest disappointments

1. C.C. Sabathia: SP Cleveland Indians

I think at this point it would be an understatement to say that Sabathia has been a disappointment to fantasy owners everywhere. If you took Sabathia in the opening rounds of your draft I feel for you, because there is no way you’re getting value for him at this point and playing him isn’t exactly working out well either. After his Cy Young season last year where Sabathia went 19-7 with a 3.21 ERA he’s been absolutely dismal in his 8 starts this season posting a 2-5 record with a 6.55 ERA. He has shown improvement of late, his last start against Toronto was more C.C. esque when he threw 9 K’s and allowed just one run. That could be a light at the end of the tunnel and perhaps an opportunity to offer up a trade for Sabathia at a bargain price for owners who desperately need a starter. That is if you think he can turn things around.

2. Justin Verlander: SP Detroit Tigers

Much like the team he plays for Verlander has been a huge disappointment this season to Tiger fans and fantasy owners alike. After posting win totals of 18 and 17 in his last two seasons Verlander has been the most depressing starter to watch, even more so then Sabathia at this point. He’s 1-6 this year with a 6.43 ERA and has not even shown a glimpse of improving. He seems to be struggling with his mechanics and may need some time off to re-tool his game. Unlike Sabathia, Verlander has yet to prove that there is some light at the end of the tunnel, his last three starts were worse than his first 5, as he posted a 7.23 ERA in that stretch. It’s not looking good for you if you own Verlander, and it will be impossible to unload him for anything near the value you used to get him. At the moment it does not look like things are going to get any better. Let him ride the pine for awhile and pray that he improves.

3. David Ortiz: 1B/DH Boston Red Sox

Ortiz has just not looked comfortable at the plate this year. He’s suffered some significant slumps this year, which could be the result of discomfort from his surgically repaired right knee. He has showed signs of improvement lately, especially during his nine game hitting streak where he’s hit at a .410 clip to go along with three home runs and eight RBI’s. Overall though I think fantasy owners expect more from Ortiz whose batting .240 on the season with 7 HR’s and 29 RBI’s in a potent Sox lineup. Owners of Ortiz should expect him to turn things around eventually and end up in line with his career numbers. Don’t jump the gun and send Ortiz packing. He may be a bit of a disappointment thus far but he will produce.

4. Ryan Howard: 1B Philadelphia Phillies

This one hits particularly close to home for me as I made Howard my second pick in the draft, behind Jose Reyes. So yea, neither one of my first two picks are really paying off, but even Reyes’ slumping play can match that of Howard. I knew going into the pick that Howard would strike out a ton, but he’s hit for decent average in the past and of course displays tons of power neither of which has come to fruition just yet. Howard is batting a cellar dwelling .171 with just 7 homers and 19 RBI’s, not exactly the production I was looking for out of my second round pick. By comparison I got Lance Berkman in round six (thank god) which has allowed me to relegate Howard to the darkest corner of my fantasy bench. Not much else to say about Howard, if you own him don’t start him right now. There are waiver wire players out there that will exceed his current production. Don’t trade Howard away yet either, just hold onto him and hope he turns it around in time to make an impact for your fantasy team.

5. Travis Hafner : 1B/DH Cleveland Indians

Is it me or does it seem like Cleveland is getting saddled with the most disappointments and surprises? Either way it is quite shocking how far Hafners game has fallen these past two years. From being one of the best all around hitters in the game from 04-06 Hafner struggled a bit last year hitting only 24 homers and driving in 100 runs. Many thought Hafner would bounce back with a monster season this year but it just isn’t there. He’s batting just .214 with 3 HR’s and 17 RBI’s pretty dreary results from a player of his caliber. I’m not convinced that Hafner is going to turn it around at some point and if you own him you really need to start looking for other options.

Fantasy Update: Top 5 Fantasy Pitchers

Fantasy Top 5 Starting Pitchers:

By Matt Valentine

Just so you know, I base these rankings off of past and current production, like the everyday players I feel that it’s in a fantasy player’s best interest to have pitchers who have a long track record of success, rather than just going with potential or rising stars. Therefore, these are the pitchers you should find a way to get on your teams roster if they’re not already there.

1. Jake Peavy

Peavy has been a workhouse over the last three years never having pitched under 200 innings. He is also been a K machine during that span with over 200 strikeout in the past three years. Last year proved that Peavy is an elite pitcher when he posted a record of 19-6 with a 2.54 ERA. Peavy is one ace every fantasy owner should want on their roster.

2. Johan Santana

No pitcher has been a better fantasy stud then Johan has over the last several years. He’s always a candidate for the CY Young award, and has not pitched less than 200 innings since the 2004 season. You can almost guarantee that he will win 15+ games and strikeout 200+ batters. The move to the NL should help Santana’s win total as long as the Mets offense can get itself hitting on all gears.

Brandon Webb

Webb is another workhorse pitcher that will throw a ton of innings. Only in his rookie year did he not surpass the 200 inning mark. Webb doesn’t strike people out like Santana our Peavy but he still manages above average strikeout totals somewhere between 160-190 K’s a year. Webb has been absolutely dominant this season going 8-0 thus far, and dare I say, may be coming into the prime of his career. I would trade away the top pitcher on my staff not named Peavy or Santana to nab this stud.

Carlos Zambrano

If you want a pitcher who will put up good numbers in every category year in and year out then Zambrano is a solid choice. Despite the occasional mental lapse on the mound Zambrano is a dominating pitcher on a team that should put up a lot of runs helping him to secure a good amount of wins. 15-20 wins is an extremely realistic goal. He also strikes batters out, but may walk more batters then you would like. Still, Zambrano is a pitcher that can be trusted and you can ride him as your ace if you the other options are unavailable, he may even come at a cheaper price.

5. John Smoltz

Smoltz is having trouble with his shoulder this year having been on the DL twice already. He may find himself back in the bullpen if his shoulder continues to bother him. However, he has been a dominant pitcher all of his career whether it is in the bullpen or as a starter and is one of baseball’s most consistent on the mound. Smoltz is 200k threat, and always puts up double digit win totals as long as he remains a starter. If Smoltz makes a trip to the pen look at it as an opportunity to snag a valuable starter for a lower rate as I doubt he’ll remain in the pen for the entire season.

Fantasy Baseball Update

By Matt Valentine

The draft is long over by now, and you may or may not like the team you have assembled. Don’t worry just yet though the season is young, and one of the best part parts of fantasy baseball is finding those waiver wire gems, and making some savvy trades to fatten your wallet and bring the championship home.

There are certain types of players that everyone wants on their team they are the players that have shown consistent production throughout their career and have been hot since the season began. Here’s some players who can become cornerstone’s of your team and who you should target for a trade if they’re not on your current roster.

1. Lance Berkman

No player in baseball is hotter right now then “Fat Elvis”. He has been on an absolute tear lately putting up one of the most productive nine game streaks in the history of the game. Check out this stat line: A batting average of .628 with 15 hits, 10 runs scored, a 1.136 slugging percentage and a .741 on-base percentage. Berkman’s seasons totals now stand at .382 BA, 12 HR’s 36 RBI’s 40 runs scored and 6 stolen bases. Berkman is putting the “disappointment” of last season behind him and is a player everyone should be looking to acquire.

2. Hanley Ramirez

Hanley has been one of the best and most consistent fantasy players over the past 2 seasons in traditional 5×5 leagues and is proving that he is at the top of his game once again. He’s got all the tools you need, he steals bases (102) over the past two seasons, has shown increased power going from 17 HR’s his rookie season to 29 in his sophomore season and he hits for average, .292 in his debut season to .332 in last years campaign. This year seems to be no different for this outstanding young player. He’s batting at a .336 clip, he’s tallied 8 HR’s and stolen 13 bases thus far. No other SS in the league produces like Hanley and at this point it’s a guarantee, barring injury, that he’ll finish in the top 10 of traditional fantasy leagues.

3. Chase Utley

Utley like Ramirez produces in every category you need to win a 5×5 league. He’s been consistent all year and throughout his career. He’s currently batting .327 with 13 HR’s, 28 RBI’s, and 3 SB. Utley draws walks too,(18 BB ) just another plus to his fantasy game . Unless you have Hanley, try and grab Utley, offering up a slumping player like Jose Reyes, who seems to have been in a funk since the second half of last year, may be the perfect trade bait.

4. Chipper Jones

Chipper has been a fantasy producer for quite a while now. His only problem is staying healthy. Wait for Chipper to find his way onto the DL and offer up a trade for him because if there is one thing this man does it is produce great fantasy numbers when he’s on the field. Chipper leads the majors with his. 400 BA , he’s demonstrated power and patience with 10 HR, and 16 BB, he’s never really been a threat on the base paths so if you need help in that category look elsewhere. Find a way to get Chipper on your team and you will not be disappointed.

5. A-Rod

A-Rod had a monster season last year and was the catalyst for many a fantasy team’s championship. Simply put, if you want a guaranteed 30+ homers, 100+ RBI’s , 100+ Runs and double digit SB’s then look no further than A-Rod who has put up that type of production throughout his career. He’s been hurt this season and wasn’t putting up stellar numbers like he did at the beginning of last year, but you just can’t argue with this guys talent. In fact, his injury may be the perfect time to offer up a trade for him as some owners tend to get impatient with players on the DL.
