Thanks for the Blowouts

By Matt Valentine

Thanksgiving, probably my favorite holiday of them all. I get to sit at home eat, drink, and watch some good old fashioned American football.

Just one problem with Thanksgiving circa 2008…every single game was a blowout. Let’s begin with the first game on today , Detroit and Tennessee. While most of us were dining on some finger foods, chips n’ dip , and perhaps a few adult beverages we were all “treated” to watching the worst team in football take on one of the best and of course hilarity ensued.

Why are the Lions even on national TV at this point? The team is 0-11 and very likely headed for an  0-16 season. They are a complete disaster to watch and outside of Calvin Johnson have no players that inspire enthusiasm.

So basically unless you are a Titans fan the game was a complete bust to watch. In fact, I’m betting that most Titan fans didn’t even watch the entire game and witness their teams 47-10 drumming of the hapless Lions.

I moved past the tragedy that was the first game in the NFL’s Thanksgiving day lineup, filled myself up with some delicous turkey, stuffing, mashed potatos, and more adult beve’s and tuned in for the second game, the Dallas Cowboys and the Seatlle Seahawks.

Love em or hate em the Cowboys are an interesting team to watch and while the Seahawks have been pretty dismal this year I had my fingers crossed for a tight game. So much for crossing your fingers. The Cowboys scored on their first three drives, quickly ending any notion that this game would be even remotely competitive. I’d like to say that I watched the entire game but, I didn’t and it was probably for the best because 34-9 doesn’t exactly sound appealing.

Ahh, but there was hope yet, the Eagles and Cardinals we’re coming on and this game had to be a good one! I mean what are the chances of three blowouts in a row? Apparently pretty damn good! This game was pretty much over at half time and the score was surprising even to myself. The Eagles and their much malinged QB Donovan McNabb simply dominated the game leading by 24-7 at the half. I actually did stay tuned in to this game, but only because Westbrook is on my fantasy team and I’m fighting for a first round bye. Once Westbrook left the game, so did I.

The games were a bust, but at least the food and drinks we’re enough to satisfy.

McNabb Doesn’t Know Overtime Rule

By Matt Valentine

In what has to be on eof the most ridiculous things to ever come out of a professional quarterbacks mouth, Donovan McNabb stated during a postgame press conference, that he was unaware of the overtime rule in the NFL.

The rule McNabb was referring to is of course the fact that an NFL game can end in a tie if neither team scores during the overtime period. This was the case when the Eagles and Bengals played on Sunday ending in a 13-13 tie.

When asked McNabb said, “I’ve never been a part of a tie. I never even knew that was in the rule book. It’spart of the rules and we have to go with it. I was looking forward to the next opportunity to get out there and try to drive to win the game.”

McNabb in a postgame press conference talks about the overtime rule.

McNabb in a postgame press conference talks about the overtime rule.

I mean this really has to be the silliest thing a professional QB could possibly say. Not only did McNabb not know the rule, but he didn’t help his team much on the field either, turning the ball over 4 times in the contest, the first time he’s done that since 2003.

While the tie does not entirely destroy the Eagles post season hopes it sure doesn’t help. At 5-4-1 the Eagles find themselves in last place in the NFC East and unless they go on a winning streak have little chance at a wild card berth either.

Now to be fair many people have suggested that had McNabb known the rule perhaps he would have played more agrresively in overtime. One, McNabb has been throwing the ball agressively all day long and it resulted in the 3 interceptions. Two, to suggest that he would have some how tried harder to win the game had he known that it would end in a tie is just plain silly. McNabb was out there trying to win no matter what the rule was that’s his job.

The Eagles will move on this season and make no mistake about it, McNabb will be the quarterback, despite Eagles fans calling for his job and possibly his head. What should be noted is that McNabb’s contract is up next season and its likely that the two will part ways. The real question is will head coach Andy Reid remain in Philadelphia if they don’t make the playoffs this season? That remains to be seen, for now the Eagles must refocus their attention on making a postseason run.

Wildcat Formation Leading Dolphins to Victory

By Matt Valentine

Usually reserved for games played on Fridays or Saturdays the wildcat formation has found a home on Sundays.

The wildcat formation a formation popular among high school football coaches and some college coaches (or at least a variation thereof) has found its way to the Miami Dolphins playbook.

Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown taking a direct snap in the Wildcat formation

Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown taking a direct snap in the Wildcat formation

For those of us who enjoy watching football, but dont get too deep into the technical side of the sport here’s a very brief explanation of the Wildcat formation. The Wildcat is a variant of the single-wing formation which was founded by legendary coach Pop Warner in 1907. Basically, in the wildcat formation you have a running back that lines up in a simliar position to a quarterback in shotgun formation. This back will take a direct snap from the center while another back is sent in motion from a slot position just prior to the snap. Furthermore, it calls for an unbalanced, reshuffled line, often with two natural tackles playing on the weak side

The quarterback doesn’t even need to be on the field or can line up as a wideout in this formation. The formation is primiarly a run offense, but can be used to draw defenders in while a TE or WR sneaks out where he can receive a pass from the back.

Now the defense is left with a number of possible options: A. the back can take the direct snap and run the ball, B. the back can take the direct snap and hand off to the other back that is set in motion, or C. the back can take the direct snap roll out and look for a passing option downfield.

So, this leads us to Week 3 in the NFL the Miami Dolphins square off against the New England Patriots.  The Dolphins lined up in the wildcat formation a number of times and guess what….it resulted in five touchdowns all accounted for by Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown, 4 TD’s on the ground and one through the air, when Brown connected with TE Anthony Fasano for a 19 yard TD strike. For once Bill Bellicheck and his famed genius was nowhere to be found. His defense looked lost every single time the Dolphins lined up in the wildcat and it resulted in 38-13 blowout. In total the wildcat formation was employed six times during the Dolphins, Patriots game…I’d day the results speak for themselves.

Ronnie Brown is the key to the wildcat formation success in Miami.

Ronnie Brown is the key to the wildcat formation success in Miami.

The Dolphins would employ the wildcat again in their week 5 match-up against the San Diego Chargers. And while the wildcat would have a limited success this time around (47 net yards gained), it still resulted in a key touchdown that would give the Dolphins the lead and an eventual victory.

The Dolphins head coach Tony Sporano who is in his first year with the team, has stated that the Dolphins are just scratching the surface of how the wildcat can be employed this season. So far, the wildcat has helped lead a team that was 1-15 last year to a 2-2 record this season, with wins over some of the AFC’s best teams.

Now the question becomes will the wildcat catch on elsewhere in the NFL? The Patriots used the formation in their game against the 49ers, and the Dolphins have no plans to stop using the formation, at least until it stops working. Like the spread offense that is sweeping college football and lighting up scoreboards, the wildcat may soon have NFL defensive coordinators scratching their heads and NFL offensive coordinators salivating at the mouth.

The Super Bowl Champ Will Come From the NFC East

For a long time all of the so called experts in the NFL have been declaring the AFC as the superior league in professional football.

Now, many of them seem to be changing their tune and for a damn good reason. If you watched any of the ridiculously entertaining shootout on Monday night between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys then you know why they suddenly seem to all be siding with the NFC as the  best league in the NFL and the NFC East as perhaps the best division in all of sports.

Take a look at the NFC East and you’ll find that even its presumably weakest team, the Washington Redskins, just beat the team many predicted to win the NFC South, the New Orleans Saints. Now consider, that the Dalls Cowboys are perhaps the leagues most talented team, the New York Giants are the defending Super Bowl champs and have continued to perform exactly like that through the first two weeks, and the Philadelphia Eagles nearly defeated the Cowboys and you have one tough division and the makings of a Super Bowl champ.

Yet, its not just the fact that the top three teams in the NFC East all have the potential to beat any other team in the league on any given Sunday it’s also the fact that all the “top” teams in the AFC haven’t looked anywhere near as prolific as the “beasts of the East”.

The Colts for example, who lost to the underdog Bears in a game that frankly wasn’t even close and then came back the next week to win a squeaker against the improved, but still unstable (especially at the QB position)  Minnesota Vikings.

Then there is the San Diego Chargers another favorite in the AFC, whose record now stands at 0-2 with loses to the Denver Broncos (though Ed Hoculi played a fairly major role in that one) and the unheralded Carolina Panthers. And who now may have to deal with an injury to star running back Ladanian Tomlinson that may nag him throughout the season and are playing without All-World linebacker Shawn Merriman for the rest of the season and their Super Bowl hopes look a bit dimmer.

Need I even mention the other heavy favorite in the AFC whose record setting quarterback suffered a season ending injury, dramatically altering the landscape of the entire NFL? Yes, the Patriots are still a good team without Tom Brady, but a Super Bowl contender with Matt Cassel at QB,….I don’t think so.

The fact is that there are no teams in the NFL and certainly no division NFC or AFC that can match the talent in the NFC East.

Let’s start with the defending Super Bowl champs. Though they lost the defensive prowess of both Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora their defense has yet to miss a beat. In their first two games the Giants D has surrendered just 20 points, scored 1 TD, sacked the QB 7 times and picked them off once.  Not to mention that Eli looks much improved, Plaxico Burress is an absolute beast, the rest of the receiving corps is solid as can be and they have what could be considered the best running back committee in the NFL with Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, and Bradshaw in the backfield and the G-Men look poised to make another deep run into the playoffs.

The Cowboys, the popular Super Bowl pick at the start of the season have thus far lived up to their star status. Romo continues to develop into an elite QB, connecting with Terrell Owens and Jason Witten both excellent receivers and their defense is as strong as ever (Monday night being the exception). The addition of Felix Jones as a change of pace back to the bruising Marion Barber has paid big dividends in the first two weeks and has added a threat not just in the backfield, but on special teams as well. Player for player Dallas is the most talented team in the league if they can avoid an upset like last year they could be representing the NFC in the Super Bowl and if they get there, there is no reason to think they shouldn’t win it all.

Now, perhaps the biggest surprise thus far has been the play of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles have always had a strong defensive team with Jim Johnsons exotic blitzing schemes giving opposing QB’s fits. Yet, they haven’t had a healthy Donovan McNabb in a long time, that is until this year and its showing in their play. Brain Westbrook is in my opinion the best all-around running back in the league and the addition of rookie Desean Jackson has aided a passing game that has suffered a number of injuries to their starting wideouts, that is if he manages to cross the goal-line with the ball (come on buddy let’s not be silly!). If McNabb stays healthy, and with Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown due to return at some point this season the Eagles should be a major player for the rest of the year and a definite Super Bowl contender.

It’s a long road to the Super Bowl, but when its all said and done look for one of these three teams to be holding the Lombardi Trophy at the end of season.

Fantasy Football Week Two QB Review

As week two of fantasy football comes to a close there have been a number of surprises and disappointments at the QB position so far this season. Let’s take a look back at some of the best week 2 performances from the NFL’s Quarterbacks.

1. Jay Cutler-Denver Broncos

Jay Cutler is emerging as a true fantasy star this season and Denver (and my fantasy team) are all the better for it. In the last two weeks Cutler has faced what were supposed to be some staunch passing defenses in Oakland and San Diego and has absolutely torched them to the tune of a combined 650 yards, 6 TD and 1 pick. Cutler was dominant in the first half against San Diego tossing three touchdown passes, he had some trouble moving the ball in the third quarter but came back to toss a 4th TD pass in the closing moments of the game and followed it up with a 2pt conversion (both to WR Eddie Royal) sealing a 39-38win over the Chargers.  At this pace Cutler could emerge as a top 5 fantasy QB by years end, I for one am keeping my fingers crossed.

2. Phillip Rivers- Sand Diego Chargers

Though he was outplayed by Cutler, Rivers more then held his own in this week two shootout, especially considering L.T. was sidelined for most of the game with a toe-injury. Rivers threw for 377 yards with 3 TD and 1 INT. He connected with Chris Chambers on on two TD strikes and got a nice assist from Darren Sproles on a check-down that Sproles took to the house. Rivers and the Chargers offense once again got off to a slow start, but heated up in the second half only to lose the game in the final moments. Right now Rivers looks like a solid play week to week.

3. Kurt Warner- Arizona Cardinals

Kurt put a big hurting on the Dolphins defense in week two making them look like fish out of water. He connected on 19 of 24 passes for 361 yards and 3 TD. For the second straight game Warner didn’t committ a turnover and he has clearly cemented himself in the starting role for the time being. I guess Leinart can go back to partying his ass off because if Warner keeps playing like this there’s no chance he’s going to see the field so he might as well go back to doing what he does best. He has another decent matchup against Washington next week and should be in your starting lineup as long as he’s the Cardinals starting QB.

4. Aaron Rodgers- Green Bay Packers

Brett Who? Thats probably what most Packers fans are saying after watching Rodgers the last two weeks, especially if they caught any of the Jets-Pats game. Rodgers has stepped in and led the Green Bay offense to two straight victories and although he played against a terrible Lions defense he is proving himself as a solid fantasy starter week to week, though next week he faces a much stiffer test in the Cowboys D so you may want to look elsewhere. Rodgers threw for 328 yards and 3 TD’s and has a great connection with last years breakout player Greg Jennings who racked up 167 yards receiving. If Rodgers continues his play people like me won’t even have to mention Favre and Rodgers in the same sentence again.

5. Eli Manning- NY Giants

Eli has never really been a fantasy stud, but he certainly looked like one on Sunday. He torched a woeful Rams secondary to the tune of 260 yards and 3 TD’s in leading the Giants to a 41-13 rout. Ever since his Super Bowl run Manning has the type of confidence you want to see in a QB and has demonstrated it on the field. The Giants play a fairly favorable schedule for the next few weeks with Cincinnati, Seattle, Cleveland, and San Francisco on the slate and Eli should be considered a starter for all of thos games if you have him on your roster.

Giants and Strahan In Talks about Comeback

It happened in the blink of an eye. What was once the Giants greatest strength coming into the season quickly became a glaring weakness and now the Giants have reached out to the recently retired former Giant great Michael Strahan in hope of having him return to the team to replace the inured Osi Umenyiora.

Umenyiora’s injury occured in the second quarter of the Giants preseason game against the Jets. While trying to bull rush a lineman Osi twisted his knee awkwardly sustaining ligament damage that will sideline him for the rest of the season. Inital reports from the team had stated that there was no ligament damage to the knee, but upon further examination docotrs discovered that Umenyiora would require season ending surgery.

Now the Giants are left hoping that Strahan can come out of retirement and continue to play at the level he did last season. Strahan is currently on vacation in Greece, but his agent Tony Agnone has been in talks  with the Giants officials about a possible comeback.

For the time being, however, the Giants have moved Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end, the same position he manned throughout his college career and in his first season with the Giants. Linebacker Danny Clark who was signed by the Giants in the offseason will move to strong side linebacker , while Gerris Wilkinson will man the weak side.

Strahan had mulled retirement last season , missing all of training camp before returning to the team to help lead them to their Super Bowl victory over the Patriots. However, unlike last season when Strahan had continued to work out to try and maintain a football physique he has done little this off season to keep himself in playing shape.

Sources have stated that Strahan is seriously considering the comeback, but he expects to make at least $8 million for the season and could demand as much as $12 million. The Giants do have $12 million available under the salaray cap, but it is unlikely that they would offer Strahan the full $12 million just in case moves need to be made during the season.

Strahan is scheduled to begin work for Fox’s NFL pregame show, yet executives at Fox have told Strahan that his job would be waiting for him should he decide to accept the Giants offer.

Giants co-owner Steve Tisch has expressed his interest in Strahan returning to the Giants,

“Would I like Michael to be a New York Giant this season? Absolutely. Absolutel. Will he be? I have no idea. I don’t even want to put a percentage on it but things changed very quickly [Saturday] night and if one of the potential solutions is to reach out to Michael, worst-case, it’s certainly worth a phone call.”

While there is some optimism about a possible Strahan return around the organization, many of Strahan’s former teammates are not as optimistic.

Justin Tuck the man who replaced Strahan at defensive end has this to say,  “As I know it, he is probably on a beach somewhere sipping on some pina coladas, so I doubt football is the first thing on his mind today.”

What we do know is that we’ve already seen one great make a return from retirement in New York and now its possible that we may see another. The Giants season may hinge on it.

Manny Headed To Hollywood

Ramirez bids goodbye to Boston.

Ramirez bids goodbye to Boston.

The Red Sox have finally parted ways with their oft disgruntled slugger Manny Ramirez in a stunning 3-team trade that sent Ramirez to the L.A. Dodgers.

Just days earlier it appeared that Ramirez would be sent to the Florida marlins, but that deal failed to materialize and the Red Sox instead found willing partners in the Pittsburgh Pirates, and L.A. Dodgers. The Pirates have been one of the heaviest sellers in this years trade market dealing away some of their best players in return for younger talent. In this trade they saw slugger Jason Bay head to the Red Sox and in return they received reliever Craig Hansen and outfielder Brandon Moss from Boston and third baseman Andy LaRoche and Pitcher Bryan Morris from the Dodgers. All the players with the exclusion of Morris will report to Pittsburgh, Morris will report to Pittsburgh’s Class A team in Hickory.

The move instantly makes the Dodgers a real threat in the National League and should propel them past the Diamondbacks in the chase for the NL West lead. At the beginning of the day the Dodgers were just one game behind Arizona in the NL West. The Dodgers already have a crowded outfield with manager Joe Torre constantly juggling Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Andruw Jones and Juan Pierre, but should be more then pleased with the new “problem” of finding a place for Ramirez in their lineup.

Ramirez was hitting .299 for the Sox, with a team leading 20 home runs and 68 RBIs. He is one of only eight players to hit at least 20 homers in 14 consecutive seasons.

While this may seem like a raw deal for Boston the acquisition of Jason Bay should ease any Sox fans worries. The two time All-Star is batting .282 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs, nearly the exact amount of production provided by Manny thus far this season. Add to that the fact that Bay is 7 years younger then Ramirez and that Ramirez was headed for the free agent market at the end of the season anyway and Boston’s front office is looking as savvy as their football counterpart.

Jason Bay headed to the Sox

Jason Bay headed to the Sox

The last place Pirates on the other hand better hope that these deals pay off in the future or their fans may start a riot…that is if they care enough to do so. The Pirates have already dealt away Xavier Nady and Demaso Marte to the Yanks and now send another of their star players to the AL East. If none of the players they’ve acquired turn into true everyday players they could find themselves in the basement for a long, long time.

Not So Shocked: Giants Trade TE Jeremy Shockey

Shockey inured at the Super Bowl

Shockey inured at the Super Bowl

In a move that should come as no surprise to anyone who has been following the Giants the past few months the team has finally dealt their oft-disgruntled tight end Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints for 2nd and 5th round draft picks in the 2009 draft.

The deal made just days ago was the exact same deal the Saints offered the Giants prior to this years draft and will reunite Shockey with one time Giants offense coordinator and current head coach of the Saints, Sean Payton. The one year that Shockey spent with Payton, his rookie season in 2002, was his most prolific in the NFL. He caught 74 passes for 894 yards and 2 TD’s and should be an excellent addition to the
pass happy offense Payton has installed in New Orleans.

In that sense the trade should be a mutually beneficial one. Though the Giants have lost an incredibly talented player in Shockey who is a four time Pro-Bowler, they’ve also lost the numerous distractions that
come with him. Shockey has always been a highly gifted receiver; he is explosive and plays with emotion. I remember watching him in the Hall of Fame game his rookie season, his first game as an NFL player, he
literally plowed over people on his way to the end zone a sign of things to come I thought.

Yet, things never did go as far as many expected. Though Shockey did show flashes of brilliance, he never did develop into the devastating weapon that the Giants and their fans thought he would be, and far too
often he let his emotions get the best of him. He once threw a cup full of ice into the stands during a playoff game, and he often criticized QB Eli Manning for not looking his way. He hated the idea of blocking and wanted to get vertical as much as possible. He would criticize the coaches, the players, the fans, and the franchise and it finally all came to a head this off-season when himself and Jerry Reese got into a shouting match during mini-camp, it was the beginning of the end of the Shockey era.

So who really wins in this trade? At this point it’s difficult to say, but all things considered it will probably work out just fine for all parties. The Giants have proven they can play without Shockey and win. Many people actually credit Shockey’s departure from the lineup as the reason for the rapid maturation of Eli Manning, though Eli has claimed that he will miss Shockey, I for one can’t see why. You also have to consider the fact that Shockey just did not want to be a New York Giant any longer, and would have been a cancer in the locker room, many reports stated that his recent antics alienated his teammates to the point that it may have been difficult to find him a roommate at training camp. No franchise needs that type of distraction when they’re trying to defend a Super Bowl title.

Futhermore, the Giants do get a 2nd and 5th round pick in next years draft, and who knows, the Saints could tank next year and that could end up being a high second rounder, or the Giants could package some
picks and trade for an additional first round pick, all legitimate options.

The Saints on the other hand, finally get a tight end that can stretch the field and one who has worked extremely well in Payton’s system in the past. However, Shockey is coming off a serious leg injury and may
not be fully healed by the start of the season and as we’ve seen he can become a huge headache. But, he should be happy in New Orleans,at least for the time being.

Raiders Al Davis Unsure of Offseason Moves?

(If you stare at Al Davis long enough he can look right into your soul.)

For the first time in his tenure as owner of the Oakland Raiders and perhaps for the first time in his entire life Al Davis is questioning himself, and more specifically the moves he made during the offseason.

In typical Al Davis fashion the Raiders went on a free agent spending spree this offseason, inking three players to multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts. Among those signed by the Raiders were former Giants safety Gibril Wilson, former Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly. Wilson was given a sic-year, $39 million contract, $16 million of which is guaranteed. Hall took in the largest contract with a seven- year, $70 million whopper, including $24 million guaranteed after being traded away by the Falcons. Kelly was re-signed to a seven-year $50.5 million contract, with $18.125 guaranteed.

The team also signed oft-inured wide receiver Javon Walker and re-signed running back Justin Fargas as well. In the last two seasons the team has been forced to dole out huge contracts to rookies because of their high first round draft pick status. JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden were both given sizable contracts because of their draft position.

Al Davis should be questioning the moves he’s made, but he should be looking much further back then just this past offseason. The Raiders have made a string of questionable decision regarding their coaches and players since the 2003 season when they lost the Super Bowl to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since that time the Raiders have a league worst 19-61 record and have gone through four coaches in the last five seasons. It was even reported that the team wanted to coach Lane Kiffin to step down after last season, his first with the team.

Davis has been too hasty when reacting to his teams performance on the field over the past 5 seasons. He has not allowed a single coach to establish an offensive game plan or take command of the locker room. The only coach who has remained is defensive coach Rob Ryan, and the teams defensive performance has been the one constant positive over the years.

Many sources have claimed that Davis sought the services of former Green Bay Packers vice president of player finance Andrew Brandt. Davis wanted Brandt to player a larger role in selecting and evaluating the type of talent the Raiders should be adding to their team. However, Brandt reportedly declined Davis’ offer and instead countered with an offer to be a consultant to the team.

The Raiders camp has vehemently denied the rumors swirling around Davis’ crisis of confidence. Oakland public relations director Mike Taylor told reporters, “You obviously don’t know Al Davis. Self-doubt is not part of the equation with Al Davis,” Taylor said. “I’m not going to justify this tripe, this drivel by even asking (Davis) for his response. It’s ludicrous, it’s insane, it’s rumor-mongering and it’s irresponsible journalism.

“The fact is, we’re very excited about what we’ve done here this offseason and looking forward to a great year. We’ve signed or traded for three of the top players at their position and picked up two of the top players in the draft the past two years.”

The fact is though, that the Raiders did overpay for a number of their free agent signings. Tommy Kelly for example has never posted more then 4.5 sacks and has yet to prove himself as a solid player in this league in 3 NFL seasons and yet he was rewarded with a monster contract. DeAngelo Hall is considered to be an elite shutdown corner, but he has demonstrated some character flaws on more then one occasion and his on field demeanor can hurt a team more then help. Gibril Wilson is an effective safety, but was most likely overpaid because of his new found Super Bowl champion status.

Whether Al Davis’ confidence in his offseason moves is shaken or not, only time will tell if the spending spree will payoff in wins.

Fantasy Football Preview: Top 10 RB

Top 10 Running Backs

1. Ladanian Tomlinson -San Diego Chargers

Tomlinson is the most consistent fantasy performer and has been since he broke into the league in 2001. He has never posted less then double digit touchdown figures and never run for less then 1200 yards in a season. Tomlinson’s abilities are not limited to just pounding the ball, he also has great hands out of the backfield and will throw the occasional TD pass. He plays on a potent offense that will only get better if Phillip Rivers continues to progress into a solid young quarterback. Antonio Gates helps to open up room for Tomlinson because he can stretch a defense down the field. Also, consider that this will be Chris Chambers’ first full year of full integration into the offense and that could open up even more room for Tomlinson. On the downside the numerous offensive weapons at Phillip Rivers disposal may take away a few red zone touches for Tomlinson, but he is still the go to guy when the team nears the end zone.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1500 Yds Rushing 15 TD , 400 Yds Receiving, 3 TD, 2 TD Passes.

2. Adrian Peterson- Minnesota Vikings

A.P. burst onto the NFL scene last year with his explosive rookie campaign. In just 14 games A.P. racked up 1351 rushing yards, and 12 TD’s. He also had 19 receptions for 268 yds, and 1 TD. He averaged an awe inspiring 5.6 YPC, and did all this while playing with an injured knee. If he can stay healthy for an entire season (which has been a concern) he could easily end up being the number one fantasy RB, even exceeding my number one pick Tomlinson. A.P. has set the bar high for himself, declaring that he wants 2,000 yds and 20 TD’s and he has the talent to do it. The problem is his supporting staff. Minnesota’s O-line is solid and will provide A.P. with plenty of holes to slash through, but the talent at their other skill positions is lacking. The addition of Bernard Berrian in the off-season should help a feeble passing game, especially if Sydney Rice continues to progress. However, Tarvaris Jackson has yet to prove himself as a reliable QB and their backup QB’s don’t really inspire much hope. On the upside of things Minnesota’s unreliable passing attack will force them to dish the ball to Peterson alot, and every time he touches the ball he’s a threat to take it to the house. Though I ranked Tomlinson higher because he plays for a better team and has been a consistent performer I’m still expecting big numbers from Peterson.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1600 Yds Rushing 15 TD, 300 Yds Rec, 3 TD.

3. Brian Westbrook- Philadelphia Eagles

B-West as I like to call him, (plus its easier to type) is the best all around threat outside of L.T. He racks up receiving yards, and piles up the rushing yards too. Since he became the featured back in ‘06 he’s posted some monster yardage totals and eclispsed double digit TD totals each year when you combine his rushing and receiving TD’s. B-West is the total package. He catches the ball like no other RB in the league coming out of the backfield. He piled up 90 receptions last year alone and racked up 771 receiving yards. Oh yeah he also runs the ball really well too. He put up 1333 rushing yards and 7 TD’s last year. In a point per reception league I would consider taking him as my first RB. The Eagles have a solid O-line (as long as Winston Justice doesn’t play) and they will have a fully healthy Donovan McNabb which can only help Westbrook.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1400 Yds Rushing 9 TD, 800 Yds Rec, 7 TD.

4. Joseph Addai- Indianapolis Colts

In his first full year as the featured back Addai proved that he could handle the workload. He accumulated 1072 rushing yards in 15 games and scored 12 TD’s. He also racked in 41 receptions for 364 yards and 3 TD. Addai plays behind a solid offensive line and gets plenty of red zone opportunities. He plays with a couple of guys by the names of Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, and Reggie Wayne the latter may take some red zone looks away from Addai, but their is plenty of love to spread around in this high powered offense. I expect Addai to exceed his 2007 production by a solid amount.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1300 Yds Rushing 13 TD, 400 Yds Rec, 2 TD.

5. Steven Jackson- St. Louis Rams

I thought about ranking Jackson above Addai, but I can’t seem to get over the fact that he plays for a pretty crappy team. Their O-line is questionable at best especially after Orlando Pace went down and Marc Bulger can’t seem to keep himself on the field, leaving the team to a platoon of backups. Jackson wasn’t healthy for a majority of last year so his numbers don’t match his ability or talent. Still, in 12 games he surpassed the 1,000 yard mark and scored 5 TD’s. He has great hands out of the backfield (800Rec. Yds in 2006) and is an absolute beast running the ball when he’s at 100%. If the Rams can solve their O-line issues, and keep Bulger on the field Jackson could return to form and put up numbers similar to his 2006 campaign.

Projected Stat Line: 1600 Yds Rushing 14 TD, 600 Yds Rec, 5 TD

6. Marion Barber- Dallas Cowboys

The only reasons Barber falls to this point is because Dallas drafted Felix Jones in the first round of this years draft. That may say something about what the Cowboys think Barber is capable of, or in this case not capable of. Either they just wanted the most talented player on their draft board and took him, or they don’t think Barber can handle a full workload only time will tell. With that said, it seems pretty clear that Jones will steal some touches from Barber, you don’t let a player with that talent just ride the pine, and that should be a concern for fantasy owners in a position to draft Barber. Barber is a talented hard-running RB, and should definitely retain his goal line duties which still makes him a solid RB 1 option. Last year Barber ran 204 times for 975 yds and 10 TD’s. I expect an increase in his yardage totals but it all depends on how significant a role Felix Jones will play.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1100 Yds Rushing 12 TD, 200 Yds Rec, 1 TD.

7. Clinton Portis- Washington Redskins

Portis was a fantasy stud just a few short years ago, but has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency in the past few years. He still puts up solid numbers (when healthy) as proven by his play last year when he rushed for 1262 yds and 11 TD. The thing that concerns me about Portis besides for the injuries, is that his YPC has declined in each of the past three seasons and he’s carried a tremendous workload throughout the course of his career. On the upside, Jason Campbell seemed to take some steps forward in the quest to turn himself into a true signal caller and Chris Cooley has emerged as a star tight end. That should relieve some of the pressure off Portis’ as teams won’t always be able to stack 8 in the box. keeping Santana Moss on the field and forcing defense to defend against the deep threat would help as well.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1200 Yds Rushing, 10 TD, 400 Yds Rec, 2 TD.

8. Frank Gore- S.F. 49ers

After bursting onto the scene with an amazing 2006 season, Gore and his entire team for that fact, had a down year in ‘07. Gore has the stuff to be an elite RB in this league he just needs more from his teammates. Don’t discount the damage that losing Norv Turner to the Chargers did to San Fran’s offense and Gore in particular either. San Fran was supposed to be a good team last year and things didn’t really work out that way, I wouldn’t say they had a great draft either so it doesn’t look like they are going to get much better. Gore on the other hand can be much better then he was last year when he rushed for 1102 yards and 5 TD’s. I’m not expecting a return to the monster numbers he put up in ‘06 (1695 rush yds, 8 TD) but somewhere in between the two is a safe bet.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1300 Yds Rushing 8 TD, 300 Yds Rec, 1 TD.

9.Jamal Lewis-Cleveland Browns

Since his 2000 yard season in ‘03 Lewis’ production had fallen off steeply. In 2005 he did not even crack the 1000 yard mark. Baltimore shipped him off to Cleveland at a bargain rate and pretty much everyone assumed Lewis was finished as an elite back in the NFL. Well, Lewis did a lot to change that notion last season as he truly seemed to return to form and played a key role in helping to turn around the Cleveland franchise. He ran for 1304 yards, scored 9 TD’s and raised his YPC from a meager 3.6 in 2006 to a steady 4.4 in 2007. The Browns are a team on the verge, they have a young offensive line that should continue to get better as they grow with each other and the offense. Braylon Edwards has emerged into a star talent at wide receiver, Kellen Winslow has finally developed into the TE many thought he would be, and Derek Anderson looks to be the answer the Browns have been looking for at the QB position. These offensive weapons make it less likely that teams will key on Lewis as they were able to do in Baltimore. I suspect that last years numbers were no fluke.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1300 Yds Rushing 11 TD, 200 Yds Rec, 1 TD.

10. Larry Johnson- Kansas City Chiefs

Johnson had an extremely disappointing year in 2007 especially since he had set the bar so high in the previous two seasons. Injuries forced him to play in only 8 games, in which he ran for just 559 yards and 3 TD’s with a 3.5 YPC average. The Chiefs O-line showed their age last season and were unable to create the holes Johnson needed to make an impact. The QB situation was pretty dismal as well, Brodie Croyle may be a good QB some day but he hasn’t demonstrated that to this point. On the plus side of things the Chiefs had one of the best, if not the best, drafts and added some new blood on the O-line when they selected Branden Albert who should step in and play immediately. Albert should help the O-line in opening up holes some of those holes for Johnson that weren’t there last year. The Chiefs also drafted Jamaal Charles the RB from Texas, which means they could be worried about another potential breakdown from Johnson. It also seems clear that they do not want Johnson to shoulder as much of the workload as he has in the past in hopes of avoiding injury or fatigue. This could mean some lost touches for Johnson but he will still keep the all important goal line duties so I wouldn’t worry about Charles’ presence all that much. I’m doubting that Johnson will return to those 1700 yard seasons of the past but a return to form is expected.

2008 Projected Stat Line: 1500 Yds rushing 14 TD, 400 Yds Rec, 2 TD.
